April M.A.F.s
Monthly Artsy Favourites
Hello, dear reader
Get ready for a music heavy MAF read because I am back at writing poetry and I always ten to refall in love with music during that time. (I never truly fall out of love with music, but you get what I mean.)
The Weight Of The Woods by Dermot Kennedy
One of my most anticipated albums of the year. But before we dive into my thoughts on this, I want to take a second to talk about the two previous albums from this artist. I truly loved Kennedys debut album Without Fear. I think it lyrically one of my fave albums of all time. So, naturally, I had high hopes for Sonder. Loved the concept of Sonder. However—the album was a bit of a letdown. (It’s all in all a good album, it just didn’t live up to the first one)
When the third album was announced I was thinking this can go two ways, it can go more into the Sonder direction or a return to the debut.
It was in some ways a return but equal parts a continuation of Without Fear. The composition of the songs is more melancholic and dramatic than Sonder. I absolutely love the lyrics. If you enjoy melancholy, I can’t recommend this album enough.
For my first listen I went on a morning walk through the woods. But even if you don’t have a forest nearby to add to the weight of the woods, I think you’ll enjoy giving it a listen. Endless is probably my favorite song. But honorable mentions to Title song, Turnstile and Often, Lately.
Live Music
In this case, Freya Ridings. Coming out with her third album in May (another one of my more anticipated releases of 2026) I was able to go see her live earlier this April.
I always hoped I would get to see her live again. The last time I saw her, was my last concert before the world shut down a few years ago and the memory always has a bitter sweet aftertaste for me.
This show was extremely stripped back. And when I say extremely, I mean it was just Freya and her piano.
What a show.
I love a stadium tour and fully fleshed out concept for a large show but there is just as much artistry going into something so sweet and personal as a simple show.
The reason I put this into my artsy faves is just going to a concert in general. I truly adore live music.
Monthly Poetic Word
Wanting to keep the theme of music going for this month, I went on the hunt for a beautiful word that connects to music.
A crescendo is a gradual increase in loudness or intensity. And I guess that’s kind of what I hope for all of us. With spring coming our way (or autumn for everyone on the other side of the globe) I want boldness and no fear of taking up space for all of us.
Those dreams are there to be chased and reached.
With Love,
Ella
